TCS NQT preparation: pattern, cutoffs and a 3-week plan

TCS NQT is the most attempted campus test in India. Most eliminations happen on sectional timing, not difficulty. Here is the pattern, what each section tests, and how to prepare in three weeks.

Pattern

Real exam: Foundation — Numerical 20Q/25m, Verbal 25Q/25m, Reasoning 20Q/25m; Advanced Aptitude 15Q/25m + 2 coding problems (Digital/Prime). No negative marking. Ninja is the base offer; Digital and Prime need the advanced aptitude and coding sections and a higher percentile.

What each section tests

  • Numerical Ability: percentages, profit & loss, ratio & proportion, time & work, time-speed-distance, averages, number system, simple & compound interest, basic data interpretation.
  • Verbal Ability: reading comprehension (short passage), error spotting, sentence completion, synonyms & antonyms, para jumbles.
  • Reasoning Ability: number & letter series, seating arrangement, blood relations, coding-decoding, syllogisms, directions, data sufficiency.

A 3-week plan

Week 1: one topic a day from the numerical list, 30 questions each, timed. Read one short passage a day for verbal. Week 2: reasoning puzzles daily; start full timed sections. Week 3: a full proctored mock on the TCS pattern every second day, review every wrong answer, and work on the section with the lowest percentage, not the one you like.

Cutoffs and bands

  • 75%+ : Prime/Digital contender
  • 55%+ : Ninja offer range
  • 0%+ : Below typical cutoff — keep practicing
