How to improve your campus placement rate
Placement rates at Tier 2 and Tier 3 colleges usually sit between 35% and 60%. The difference between the two is rarely the students. It is whether the placement cell measured early and acted on the middle of the batch.
Why most prep programmes do not move the number
Three patterns repeat every season. Preparation starts six weeks before the first drive, when habits are already set. Every student is prepared for the same companies regardless of branch or score. And workshops run without a before-and-after measurement, so nobody knows what worked. The fix is visibility first, then targeted intervention, then measurement.
Week 1: baseline every student
Every student takes one mock interview and one proctored test and uploads a résumé. That gives a readiness score and a weakest signal per student. Record three numbers for the batch: readiness % (students at 70+), coverage % (students with any evidence) and the department delta. Benchmarks: readiness under 30% is a crisis, 30 to 50% average, 50 to 70% strong, 70%+ top tier. Coverage should be above 80%.
Weeks 2 and 3: tier the batch and act differently per tier
Ready (70+, usually 20%): stop general prep. Company-specific résumés, company-pattern tests, early applications. Middle band (40 to 69, usually 40%): this is the lever. Each student who crosses 70 adds directly to the placement rate. Give each one their weakest signal: a mock interview a week for the interview-weak, a proctored test for the test-weak, an ATS-approved résumé for the résumé-weak. Needs work (under 40): pair with a ready peer, assign starter courses, set a realistic 3 to 6 month timeline and do not promise this season. Not started: nudge until coverage crosses 80%.
Week 4: mock placement drive and re-measure
Run a mock drive with panel interviews of about 20 minutes and written feedback. Re-score every student and compare with the Week 1 baseline. Count newly ready students, movers up and movers down. In a 500-student batch at 38% readiness, moving 50 middle-band students across 70 lifts readiness to 48%.
Keep it going weekly
The same three numbers, every week, to the whole placement team, with each HOD seeing their department. Departments more than 20 points apart need a conversation, not a workshop. Wishire's season playbook runs this exact loop: tiers, nudges, baseline, weekly digest.
Questions people ask
- When should preparation start?
- Fifth or sixth semester. A baseline then gives the middle band a full year to move, instead of six weeks.
- What is a good readiness % to aim for?
- 50% is strong for most Tier 2 and 3 colleges in the first season; 70% is top tier.
